Intimacy in ethnographic research: sex and the field
There is often anxiety about recording and/or presenting data about potentially sensitive topics such as sex and gender. The researcher may feel constrained to protect certain zones of privacy in the documentation of such data. Yet, there is also an important need for clear, honest and transparent dialogue about these matters.
There are a few basic, familiar guidelines:
- Respect for persons
- Freedom from coercion
- Protection from harm
These four principles of research offer theoretical tools as to how to think ethically about research and gender and sexuality in the field.
